A new study in South Carolina, United States, concluded that those who have accounts on Twitter are more likely to succeed in the diet than those who do not have a Twitter account.
The study was conducted by a number of specialists who work together with the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health, reported by Newswise, Tuesday, January 15, 2013.
The results of this study were published after seeing how a group of 96 obese people, including men and women, successful weight loss after a "diet" on Twitter for six months.
How does Twitter work for weight loss?
Previously, the volunteers are encouraged to post status updates on Twitter as the beginning of the study. There is no specific procedure in a tweet, they are free to post what they are doing and feeling.
"Observing traditional behavior patterns in weight loss, moral support and small group meetings proved to be very effective to date. However, it is relatively expensive and it imposes the participants," said one specialist in exposure studies.
"Moral support via online social networking groups can be replaced, less expensive, and can involve more people," he added.
Throughout the six months of "dieting" on Twitter, there were 2630 tweets that have been posted obese participants in this study. Of that amount, 75 percent of tweets are informational, meaning that participants just wanted to tell followers what they eat in a day, and what they avoid.
The rest, tweet-tweet contains moral support (6.6%) and praise (4.6%). "The results show that those who use Twitter as a means to lose weight have been successful," said the specialists concluded.
